A new cruiser named Amphion was launched at Portsmouth, with the naming ceremony performed by the Marchioness of Titchfield. The ship's predecessor was destroyed by a mine in 1914. Amphion is the last of the three cruisers from the 1931 program and is a sister ship to HMS Leander.
