Diamonds are formed from carbon atoms in extreme conditions deep within the Earth. They are brought to the surface by volcanic eruptions. While natural diamonds are ancient, synthetic diamonds can be made in labs using chemical vapor deposition. Both types share the same mineral structure but differ in origin. The carbon in natural diamonds may come from deep Earth sediments or organic material in tectonic plates, but not from coal. Synthetic diamonds are often flawless and environmentally friendly.
