The Essenes, a Jewish sect, lived in poverty seeking spiritual enlightenment by avoiding worldly pleasures. They practiced vegetarianism, celibacy, and anger control, studying sacred texts. During the Jewish revolt of 66 CE, fearing Roman invasion, they hid their manuscripts in caves. In 1946, Bedouin shepherds discovered these scrolls, now known as the Dead Sea Scrolls.
