In 1905, the Niagara Movement was formed by W.E.B. Du Bois and others to advocate for African American rights. Du Bois, a pioneering African American scholar, was deeply influenced by his experiences in the segregated South. The movement was short-lived, but its ideals persisted, especially after the 1908 Springfield riot, which highlighted racial tensions.
