Laplace proposed that the solar system originated from a glowing gaseous sphere, or nebula, which contracted and increased its rotation speed over time. This led to the formation of a flat rotating disk, from which gaseous rings separated and eventually cooled to form the planets. The remaining central mass became the Sun.
