Six detainees from Guantánamo, including four Syrians, a Palestinian, and a Tunisian, arrived in Montevideo, Uruguay, as refugees. President José Mujica stated they are free to leave whenever they wish. The detainees were taken to a military hospital for medical checkups. According to the Pentagon, 136 detainees remain in Guantánamo. The prison was established by the U.S. in 2002 as part of the war on terror following the 9/11 attacks. President Barack Obama pledged to close the facility by the end of his term in January 2017.
