Ghulam Azam, the spiritual leader of Bangladesh's largest Islamist party, was sentenced to 90 years in prison by a special tribunal in Dhaka for atrocities committed during the 1971 independence war against Pakistan. The tribunal found him guilty of supporting the Pakistani army and creating militias responsible for millions of deaths. Azam was compared to Adolf Hitler for his role in the massacres. His lawyer argued that the charges were based on press reports of wartime speeches. The verdict may incite further violence.
