Pepe the Frog, once a meme associated with the far-right in the U.S., has found a new life as a symbol of resistance in Hong Kong. Since the protests against the Chinese government began, Pepe has appeared on various protest materials. The character, originally a peaceful comic figure, was transformed into a far-right symbol during the 2016 U.S. presidential campaign. However, in Hong Kong, Pepe never carried that connotation and became a mascot for the pro-democracy movement. The creator, Matt Ferry, is pleased with this positive rebirth of his character.
