William M. 'Boss' Tweed, a corrupt politician, was captured in Spain and returned to New York City on November 23, 1876, after escaping prison. As the head of Tammany Hall, Tweed controlled New York City politics through corruption and fraud. His practices were exposed by the New York Times and political cartoonist Thomas Nast, leading to his arrest in 1871. Convicted on numerous charges, Tweed escaped to Spain but was identified and captured. He died in prison less than two years later.
