The Battle of Antietam, fought on September 17, 1862, was the bloodiest single-day battle in American history. It was a pivotal conflict between the Union, led by Major General George B. McClellan, and the Confederacy, led by General Robert E. Lee. The battle took place near Sharpsburg, Maryland, and resulted in approximately 23,000 casualties. Despite the high losses, the Union's strategic advantage forced the Confederate Army to retreat. This Union victory provided President Abraham Lincoln the opportunity to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared that all slaves in rebellious states would be free if the states did not rejoin the Union by January 1, 1863.
