Between 1867 and 1913, numerous attempts to pass women's suffrage bills in the UK Parliament failed due to lack of government support. The Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), led by Emmeline Pankhurst, adopted militant tactics to demand voting rights. These tactics included public demonstrations, heckling, and later, more aggressive actions like property damage. Despite the risks, the WSPU believed that such militancy was necessary to force government action. The movement faced significant challenges, including police violence on Black Friday. The escalation of militancy was seen as a response to the government's inaction, but it also risked damaging the suffrage movement's reputation.
