Millard Fillmore, the 13th President of the United States, is often remembered for his mediocre presidency and the decline of the Whig Party. Initially a member of the Anti-Masonic Party, he became a Whig and rose to prominence in New York politics. As vice president, he assumed the presidency after Zachary Taylor's death and supported the Compromise of 1850, which included the controversial Fugitive Slave Act. Despite denouncing slavery, Fillmore's actions divided the Whig Party. After his presidency, he joined the Know Nothing Party and ran unsuccessfully in the 1856 election. Fillmore's legacy is marked by his weak leadership and the political turmoil leading up to the Civil War.
