In the late 1830s, women like Narcissa Whitman and Eliza Spalding became missionaries, challenging the notion that the West was too harsh for women. Their success paved the way for family migrations to Oregon. The first wagon train to California left in 1841, and the discovery of gold in 1848 spurred the Gold Rush. By 1850, many were departing from St. Joseph, Missouri, leading to a rivalry with Independence, Kansas, as both towns competed to be the main departure point for westward travelers.
