The First Battle of Chattanooga was a minor artillery engagement during the American Civil War, occurring from June 7-8, 1862. The Confederacy had divided its forces in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to complicate Federal operations. Union General Ormsby Mitchell was tasked with repairing railroads and later ordered an expedition to capture Chattanooga. Union forces, led by Brigadier General James Negley, engaged Confederate troops entrenched across the river. The Union bombardment lasted until June 8, but the Confederates' response was uncoordinated. The attack served as a warning of Union capabilities and led to Confederate troop redeployments, allowing Union forces to capture the Cumberland Gap on June 18, 1862.
