In 1938, Czechoslovakia faced pressure from Germany, led by Hitler, who demanded self-determination for the Sudeten Germans. Czech President Benes was caught between resisting and risking war or conceding to maintain peace. France and Britain, led by Chamberlain, were hesitant to support Czechoslovakia militarily. Chamberlain's appeasement policy led to the Munich Agreement, allowing Germany to annex the Sudetenland, which was seen as a diplomatic failure and a prelude to World War II.
