Europe hasn't seen a hurricane make landfall in over 50 years, but remnants of hurricanes still impact the continent. Hurricanes form off West Africa and are driven west by trade winds, rarely reaching Europe. When they do, they weaken due to colder waters and the subtropical jet stream. Despite this, remnants can cause significant damage, as seen with Hurricane Ophelia in 2017. Climate change may increase the frequency of such storms in Europe, with predictions of up to 13 powerful storms annually by the end of the century.
