On March 9th, 2023, the alert level for Tanaga and Takawangha volcanoes in Alaska was raised due to a swarm of over 600 earthquakes. The earthquakes, which became shallower over time, suggested possible magmatic intrusion. Although ground deformation was detected, it was based on noisy satellite data. The earthquake swarm has decreased, indicating the intrusion might not reach the surface. The possibility of a shared magma chamber between the volcanoes led to the alert level increase. Despite a slight increase in seismic activity, an eruption seems less likely now. Historical data shows stronger current activity compared to past swarms.
