In 1664, New Amsterdam faced the threat of English invasion. The colony, established by the Dutch West India Company, was a valuable trade hub. When the English plotted to seize it, the colony's director, Peter Stuyvesant, prepared for defense. However, the merchants, fearing for their lives and property, devised a plan. They sent Hylikond von Riven and Lydia de Meyer to negotiate with the English, leading to a peaceful surrender. New Amsterdam became New York without bloodshed, but the women's contributions were largely forgotten.
