Maryland began as a colony in 1632, named after Queen Henrietta Maria. It earned the nickname 'The Old Line State' for its troops' role in the Revolutionary War. Maryland became the 7th state in 1788, with the Mason-Dixon Line marking its northern border and the division between free and slave states. Harriet Tubman, born into slavery in Maryland, escaped and led over 300 slaves to freedom. The state features diverse climates and terrains, earning it the nickname 'America in Miniature.' The Chesapeake Bay is a significant feature, famous for its blue crabs. Assateague Island is home to wild ponies, believed to descend from a shipwrecked Spanish galleon.
