In the mid-19th century, France expanded into Southeast Asia, establishing control over Vietnam. This led to conflicts with China, including battles with Chinese forces and bandits known as the Black Flags. Despite initial setbacks, the French achieved several military victories, including the capture of Keelung and the Pescadores Islands. However, challenges persisted, such as ambushes and naval engagements. The French eventually blockaded the Yangtze River to pressure China economically. Despite military successes, a pessimistic view of the situation led to political changes in France, resulting in peace with China. Vietnam remained a French protectorate, but no further concessions were made.
