In 1823, Stephen Austin brought 300 Americans to Texas, where they were required by Santa Anna to practice Catholicism and speak Spanish. The Americans' refusal to comply led to tensions with the Tejanos. In 1833, Austin attempted to ease these tensions but was jailed. By 1835, war erupted between Santa Anna's Mexican army and Texan revolutionaries, with many Americans joining the Texan forces. The Texans defeated Santa Anna, and on May 14, 1836, Mexico recognized Texas' independence.
