Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon is rising despite past successes in reducing forest loss. Since 2012, weakened environmental policies have led to increased deforestation, largely driven by agriculture and inefficient cattle ranching. Land grabbing, often involving illegal occupation of public lands, exacerbates the problem. Legal changes have sometimes legitimized these occupations, but public outcry has halted further amnesties. Solutions include recognizing indigenous land claims, creating protected areas, punishing land grabbers, and increasing transparency in land tenure policies.
