Jim Crow laws enforced racial segregation in the Southern US from 1890 to 1965, creating inferior conditions for African Americans. These laws mandated segregation in public facilities and were supported by discriminatory practices in housing and employment. Federal policies also enforced segregation, notably under President Woodrow Wilson. Legal challenges, including Brown v Board of Education, led to the eventual overturn of these laws with the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
