Frederick Douglass was born into slavery in Maryland around 1818. Despite the challenges, he taught himself to read and write. He escaped to New York with the help of Anna Murray, whom he later married. Douglass became a prominent abolitionist speaker, risking his safety as he was still legally a slave. He toured Britain and Ireland, where supporters helped secure his freedom. During the Civil War, he advised President Lincoln and advocated for the Emancipation Proclamation. Post-war, Douglass continued to fight for racial equality and served as a U.S. Marshal and diplomat. His relentless advocacy helped shift public opinion against slavery, securing freedom for millions.
