After the fall of the Roman Empire, Europe entered the Dark Ages, with little exploration beyond its borders. In 1095, Pope Urban II called for the Crusades to reclaim the Holy Lands from Muslims. Despite some victories, the Christians eventually retreated, but the Crusades exposed Europeans to new goods like silk and spices. This led to increased exploration, with figures like Marco Polo traveling the Silk Road, and countries like Portugal and Spain seeking new trade routes, sparking the Age of Exploration and the discovery of the Americas.
