The Hawaiian archipelago consists of 137 islands, but only four have significant populations. The distances between these islands are larger than expected, with Oahu to Kauai being about 100 miles and Oahu to the Big Island about 150 miles, similar to the distance between New York City and Baltimore. Due to these distances, travel between the islands is only possible by flying or boating. Surprisingly, as of 2024, there is no regular ferry service or scheduled passenger maritime transportation between the main islands, and boat travel is rare.
