In Greece, over 200 earthquakes have recently affected popular tourist islands like Santorini, Amorgos, Ios, and Anafi. The strongest quake reached a magnitude of 4.9. This seismic activity led to school closures and increased flights to help tourists leave. The region, part of the Hellenic Volcanic Arc, is prone to earthquakes. Despite this, Santorini remains a major tourist destination. The current activity is due to tectonic movements, not volcanic activity. The last major quake in Santorini was in 1956, causing significant damage.
