In January 1931, Edward met Wallis Simpson through Lady Furness. Initially, Wallis made little impression, but she maintained contact with Edward, and their relationship grew, especially after Lady Furness left for the US in 1934. Wallis was seen as domineering, and the royal family initially ignored the relationship, thinking it was another of Edward's flings. However, by November 1934, it was clear the relationship was serious. Edward publicly declared his intention to marry Wallis, despite the royal family's disapproval.
