In 1923, President Warren G. Harding and First Lady Florence traveled to Alaska. The trip was marked by a formal reception but became more relaxed as they proceeded to open the new Alaska Railroad. Starting in Seward, they embarked on a 470-mile journey north, using a specially converted Dodge roadster for part of the trip. On July 15th, Harding was presented with a golden spike, which he hammered into place, marking the official completion of the railroad.
