In AD 43, the Romans invaded Britain, quickly controlling the southwest. However, in Wales, they faced fierce resistance from native tribes for three decades. Near the village of Kalyan, remnants of a Roman military base and an amphitheatre, where gladiatorial combats were held, still exist. The Romans occupied Wales from AD 78 to AD 383, founding towns like Caerwent near Newport. Despite their stronghold, Roman rule ended in the early 5th century when Emperor Honorius withdrew troops due to barbarian threats.
