In the early hours, Burlingame spots a submarine, initially suspecting it might be American. However, after failed Morse code signals, it is identified as an enemy vessel. Silversides attempts to evade the enemy ship, but the pursuit continues. The enemy deploys depth charges, a tactic developed during World War I, to attack the submarine. Despite the attack, Silversides avoids serious damage. As morning breaks, Burlingame observes the enemy destroyer but decides against a counter-attack as it disappears over the horizon.
