British Empire soldiers freed in prisoner exchange arrive in Casablanca during World War II

Over a thousand British Empire POWs from Germany stopped in Barcelona to exchange ships on their way home. These men, captured in Greece in 1941, hailed from the British Isles, Australia, New Zealand, and India. The exchange took several hours due to many being disabled, but the Spanish Red Cross ensured a smooth process. Britain's ambassador to Spain, Sir Samuel Hawke, greeted the returning prisoners. They departed for Port Sade to continue their journey home.
