Jihad Iyab, a former Syrian detainee from Guantánamo, has been on a hunger strike in Montevideo for over 20 days. The Uruguayan justice system has allowed him to continue as his life is not currently at risk. Iyab is willing to start consuming liquids if the government commits to resolving his request for family reunification in an Arabic-speaking country. He arrived in Uruguay as a refugee in 2014. Recently, he was hospitalized due to health deterioration but has since regained consciousness and is stable, though weakened.
