However, scientists discovered key differences: whales breathe air through lungs, not gills, and must surface to breathe. Unlike most fish, whales give birth to live young and nurse them with milk from mammary glands. Whales also have hair, albeit minimal, and are warm-blooded, allowing them to regulate their body temperature. These characteristics led to the conclusion that whales are indeed mammals.
