Aung San Suu Kyi, former leader of Myanmar, has been sentenced to an additional three years in prison by the military tribunal in Naypyidaw for violating the official secrets law. This adds to her existing 20-year sentence for corruption and electoral fraud, all of which were decided in closed trials criticized as politically motivated. Suu Kyi, detained since the 2021 military coup, faces further charges that could extend her imprisonment to 120 years. Her former advisor, Sean Turnell, and three others received similar sentences. The 2021 coup has plunged Myanmar into chaos, with over 2,200 civilian deaths and 15,000 detentions. International envoys have been unable to meet Suu Kyi during their visits to Myanmar.
