Cat allergies are caused by the protein Fel d 1, found in cat saliva, tears, and pelt. This protein triggers allergic reactions in 10% of the human population. Currently, there is no safe or efficient therapy, and patients are advised to treat symptoms and avoid cats. However, scientists in Zurich have developed a vaccine called Hypo Cat, which instructs a cat's immune system to produce antibodies that neutralize Fel d 1. Testing on 54 cats showed the vaccine is effective and well-tolerated.
