Hydrocortisone, a low-cost steroid, reduces the risk of death by about 20% in severe COVID-19 cases. The British healthcare system plans to use it following a study led by Anthony Gordon from Imperial College London. The study showed improved survival and faster recovery in patients treated with steroids. Tests on 403 patients across 88 UK hospitals revealed hydrocortisone's efficacy, potentially saving one in 12 patients. Without it, 40% of severe cases resulted in death, compared to 32% with treatment. Hydrocortisone helps reduce lung and body inflammation but is not for home use or mild cases. The NHS announced immediate measures to ensure eligible patients receive this treatment.
