Gerson Gobea, a Cuban 'friki', injected himself with HIV to avoid police harassment. He and his wife, both living with AIDS, reside in a former sanatorium in Pinar del Río, Cuba. Despite health challenges, Gerson formed a punk band but never performed publicly. The introduction of antiretrovirals transformed HIV from a death sentence to a manageable condition, ending forced internment in 1994. Gerson and his wife received housing and free treatment from the state. Between 1986 and 2015, 3,809 people died from AIDS in Cuba, with over 20,000 living with the virus.
