Duke University conducted a study on Japanese Medaka fish, revealing that microplastic fibers can damage their respiratory and reproductive systems. Researchers placed fish in tanks with microplastics, monitoring egg production and fiber ingestion. After 21 days, tissue analysis showed damage to gills and epithelial cells, with increased mucous production. Female fish exposed to microplastics laid more eggs. The study also found that microplastics in fish guts could release harmful chemicals into the bloodstream.
