Massive melting event strikes Greenland due to heat wave

Greenland's ice sheets are experiencing significant melting due to a heat wave, with temperatures more than twice the seasonal average. Danish researchers report that the ice sheet is losing nearly 8 billion metric tons daily, double the usual summer rate. Although not as extreme as the 2019 event, the melting area is larger. The ice loss could cover Florida in 5 cm of water, with much of it entering the ocean. Greenland's ice sheet, the second largest after Antarctica, spans 1.8 million square kilometers. Studies indicate the ice is melting faster than in the past 12,000 years, potentially raising sea levels by up to 33 cm by century's end.
