USS Franklin moves under its own power after disastrous bombing and fire in 1945

The Franklin overcame a major catastrophe and managed to sail under its own power to Pearl Harbor and then back to the United States. Despite losing 832 crew members and having 1000 seriously injured, the ship returned to the U.S. with only 760 on board. It sailed past the Statue of Liberty, and $45 million in repairs were made to bring it back into service.
