I WONDER - Why Purple Was Such An Important Colour To The Romans?

In ancient Rome, only the emperor could wear purple clothing, symbolizing high status. Wearing purple was restricted to emperors and senators, and any other person doing so was committing treason. Free men were allowed to wear togas, while women wore stolas or stoli, indicating Roman citizenship.
