Surat, a city in India's Gujarat state, has become the world's largest processor of uncut diamonds, handling 70% of the stones that enter the international market. This shift has occurred as Israel's diamond processing industry has declined, with much of its business moving to India. Despite having no diamond mines, India benefits from cheap labor and skilled stone cutters. However, Africa, particularly South Africa, is attempting to challenge India's dominance by processing its own raw diamonds. The competition is intensifying as both regions vie for control of the diamond processing market.
