Iraqi government forces are advancing cautiously towards Tikrit, a strategic city between Baghdad and Mosul, currently dominated by ISIS. The forces aim to encircle the combatants by converging from three directions. Baghdad has mobilized 30,000 soldiers and its air force in the largest operation since ISIS took control of large parts of Iraq in June 2014. ISIS has controlled Tikrit for nine months and has expanded its influence in northern and western Iraq, as well as in Syria. Despite some victories, Iraqi forces, with support from a US-led international coalition, have not yet recaptured Tikrit, which is key to liberating Mosul.
