Venezuelan opposition initiated a new phase of pressure demanding a referendum against President Nicolás Maduro. The government countered with a march. Despite calm protests, some violence occurred, with masked individuals clashing with security forces. The opposition distanced itself from the violence, blaming infiltrators. They reported a million attendees and plan another protest on September 7. To force new elections, the referendum must occur before January 10, 2017, and be won by the opposition.
