Francois Boshu, originally named Francois Boshu, changed his name due to its meaning in French. Born in 1813 in Paris to a modest family, his father was a tailor and his mother a laundress. Boshu pursued a career as an illustrator, working for nearly 20 years in the popular press. His fortunes were closely tied to the Second Empire, and its collapse in 1870-71 affected his ability to receive commissions and work for the government. The changing world of photography also impacted his career.
