Beneath Peru's main zoo lies a prehispanic cemetery with remains of sacrificed dogs near warrior tombs. The site, part of the Maranga archaeological complex, contains 54 sanctuaries with evidence of three ancient civilizations. Researchers have found dogs that were hanged or beheaded, indicating ritual sacrifices. Efforts are underway to identify dog breeds from pre-Inca and Inca times and understand the reasons for these sacrifices. Only a few sanctuaries have been fully recovered, and researchers are seeking international support to further explore the mysteries beneath the zoo.
