Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in Sochi to participate in the opening of the 126th International Olympic Committee session. He assured the hospitality of Russia during the Winter Olympics. Despite the spirit of the games, controversies arose due to a Russian law against homosexual propaganda and security concerns near the Caucasus region. The IOC president praised Putin for making the games a symbol of Russia's return to the international stage.
