Japanese researchers developing wooden satellites

Sumitomo Forestry, in collaboration with Kyoto University, is exploring the use of wood in satellite construction to reduce space debris and environmental impact. Current satellites use materials like Kevlar and aluminum, which contribute to space junk. Wooden satellites could decompose more naturally upon re-entry, reducing harmful particles. The project aims to develop the first wooden satellites by 2023, with wood's ability to allow electromagnetic waves to pass through as an added benefit. The specific type of wood used remains a research secret.
