Israeli archaeologists in Jerusalem's Old City unveiled a hidden section of the Western Wall and remnants of a Roman public building. Excavations began two years ago, with the floor of the prayer plaza supported by metal beams to dig beneath without disturbing worshippers. Historical sources mentioned the building, but it took 150 years of modern archaeological research to find it. Carbon-14 dating indicates the Roman theater-like structure dates to the 2nd or 3rd century, though it was never completed. The newly discovered part of the Western Wall is 15 meters wide and 8 meters high, buried under 8 meters of earth for 17 centuries. The Old City is in East Jerusalem, the Palestinian part of the area occupied and annexed by Israel.
